What do I need to do to have an abortion here?
Your local service providers are Family Planning Tauranga and you can self-refer to Rotorua Hospital if you are under 13 weeks pregnant.
- For early medical abortion (up to 9 weeks pregnant) contact Family Planning Tauranga directly on 0800 372 546.
- For early medical or surgical abortion (up to 13 weeks pregnant) contact Rotorua Hospital directly on 0800 726 447 or email tops@lakesdhb.govt.nz.
If you are over 13 weeks pregnant you will be referred through Te Whatu Ora Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty Social Work Services to other services.
- For later abortion (13-18 weeks pregnant) - Later abortions are provided at the Epsom Day Unit, Auckland. The Te Whatu Ora Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty social worker will arrange travel and accommodation as required. Phone (07) 579 8460 or email SWOT.referrals@bopdhb.govt.nz.
- For later abortion (18-20 weeks pregnant) - Later abortions may be provided through Te Whatu Ora Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty Obstetric Team. Phone (07) 579 8460 or email SWOT.referrals@bopdhb.govt.nz.
What will it cost?*
Cost for New Zealand citizen/resident
Free abortion services to any pregnant person eligible for publicly funded healthcare in New Zealand living in the Te Whatu Ora Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty district. There may be prescription fees and costs for ultrasound.
Cost for non-New Zealand resident
If you are a non-New Zealand resident and require an early medical or surgical abortion (under 13 weeks pregnant) contact Te Aka Tauawhi Tangata - Women's Clinic, Rotorua Hospital for costs, or The Women's Clinic on 0800 226 784 for telemedicine costs for early medical abortion anywhere in New Zealand.

Access is through the ground floor, main hospital entrance, Tauranga Hospital.
Mobility parking is available next to the main entrance and public parking is available across from the main entrance.
There is a bus stop outside the front of the hospital on Cameron Road.
There is a wheelchair accessible toilet.
