What do I need to do to have an abortion here? 

You can self-refer to this service. 

You can self-refer to this service by contacting the Gynaecology Procedure Unit (GPU) at Christchurch Women’s Hospital.  

  • GPU, Christchurch Women's Hospital. Monday to Thursday, 8am until 4pm - (03) 378 6386 
  • Sexual Health Clinic (Grey/Westland). Monday, 2pm until 6pm - (03) 769 7400 ext 2874.
  • Sexual Health Clinic (Buller). Monday, 11am until 4pm - (03) 788 9030 ext 8756.

Note. Early medical abortions (up to 9 weeks pregnancy) and early surgical abortions (up to 12 weeks pregnancy) are through Te NÄ«kau Hospital.

If your pregnancy is greater than 12 weeks, you can contact any one of these providers, but you will be treated through the GPU, Christchurch Women's Hospital.

What will it cost? 

Free abortion services to any pregnant person who is a resident of the West Coast and is eligible for publicly funded healthcare in New Zealand. There may be prescription fees and costs for ultrasound.

    Accessibility 

    Travel and accommodation can be approved by the Te Whatu Ora Te Tai o Poutini West Coast Social Worker. 

    Counselling 

    Abortion decision counselling, pre and post-abortion counselling are available in person.
